New York Style Dessert Table

This past Saturday, I volunteered to set up a dessert table for my kids preschool gala. I was not in charge of the desserts in the planning process, but the most creative mom at school was so busy with other things for the event, I got the job at the last minute.
All I was going to make was few apple shaped cake pops (inspired by Bakerella), and mini cupcakes. But, I was very fortunate enough to be introduced to few moms who can bake better than pros. Without them, my dessert table would have looked terrible.
The theme for the gala was, New York (color theme: apple green & white), and I wanted to create the table inspired by Amy Atlas, a New York based dessert table creator. I love her elegant, modern, trendy, upscale, clean designs. But, it was not easy trying to create poshy look when I’m more comfortable creating cutesy, whimsical, urmmm…. childish stuff.

About 10 days before the event, I went to see the restaurant to see where the table will go and took the measurement. Set up the mock-up at home to see where I should place what. All platters were from 5 different families and this is why dishes don’t match.
I put cut out cardstock pieces (brown, vanilla, red, and green) and wrote the different dessert names and to see which color desserts should go where.

I ended up using different size tables, so had to adjust my set-up plan, but I think it worked out perfectly.

Do you see the Statue of Liberty on the wine?
ny dessert table – yummies

Seriously, I felt bad taking all the credit for this wonderful dessert table. A lot of people came up to me to tell me how beautiful it was, but really, I didn’t bake anything. I had four moms (plus my hubby) who could bake so well, contributed to this awesomeness. One mom who baked 7 different foods had a flu and her son had an ear infection. And yet, she baked the most amount. And all of her creations were the best that I ever tasted.

Mint Truffles

Gateau Breton mini-cakes

Mint Brownies
I asked for the brownies in sheet pans. I cut it in mini squares, stack them up, and put some white sprinkles.

Banana Cupcakes
I was planning on baking these, but didn’t have time for it. So, I made my dear husband bake it and made the frosting for me. At the restaurant I piped the frosting with a Ziploc bag. And sprinkled some green jimmies on top.

Chocolate Cupcakes

Almond Cookies

Cranberry Pistachio Icebox Cookies

Mixed Berry Trifles
I provided the mini plastic shot glasses and one of the moms created this yummies.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Dark Chocolate Cherry and Pistachio Barks

Apple-Slice Tarts

Key Lime Pies

Green Apple Donut Pops
It’s totally inspired by Bakerella. I used Dunkin Donut Chocolate Munchkins to speed up the process =)

Chocolate Covered Triple Coconut Macaroons

Pear and Apple Pies

Chocolate-Hazelnut Meringue Kisses
YUM!

So many moms worked very hard to plan this school gala, and I wanted to surprise them with little gifts.
3×3 handmade mini card albums.

For 17 committees and volunteers. 10+ sheets of papers each for 10 teachers/staff to sign. Lots and lots of paper cutting!

Bookbinding technique learned from Journals 3 Ways workshop by Karla Dudley.

My adorable daughter, heehee =)
I put photos of committee members’ kids on their album.

I asked the teachers/staff to sign it.

I made all the inserts first and still had no clue how I was going to make the cover. Then, I saw this card on the October Afternoon blog, and completely fell in love with the simple yet beautiful layout. I used the apple punch instead since the green apple was part of the gala theme.
I wanted to surprise the committees, but I was surprised to find how much they appreciated my little gesture. I am a card maker/paper crafter, but I didn’t know people love receiving handmade cards. So, I was thankful my time and effort was well spent.
